Armed robber wrecks getaway truck, manhunt underway

By Cade Fowler - bio | email

BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) – It was a wild morning for law enforcement in Decatur County after a suspected armed robber crashed his getaway truck and then took off running.

It all started just before two o'clock Tuesday at the Kangaroo Express on Highway 84 and Shotwell Street. Investigators say a man wearing a hoodie walked into the store and pointed a gun at the clerk and then demanded money.

The clerk was able to alert police as the suspect drove off in a Nissan truck. But he didn't get far. Less than a mile away on Black Jack Road, an officer on patrol drove up on the scene of an accident. The suspect's truck hit a road sign and took down a pine tree before crashing into a tree and flipping on its side.

Somehow the driver managed to crawl from the wreckage and took off into the woods. Bainbridge Public Safety officers and Decatur County Sheriff's deputies were assisted in the search by a K-9 unit from Chattahoochee, Florida.

Police at the scene tell us that the suspect was seen on surveillance video wearing a blue bandanna. A blue bandana was found at the scene of the crash stained with blood. Search dogs were able to get a hit off the blood but never found the suspect.

This robbery is the latest in a string of hold ups in Bainbridge over the past several months. It is possible though the suspect could be in need of medical attention.

If anyone has information they're asked to contact the Decatur County Sheriff's Office at 229-248-3044 or BPSO at 248-2032
