LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) –A new bridge will replace one damaged by the April floods in Lowndes County.

The county will get a $3 million grant from FEMA for a new bridge on Skipper Bridge Road. That will pay 75 percent of the total estimated cost of the project. The state will fund 17.5 percent and the county will be responsible for the rest.

"It was actually more cost effective to go ahead and replace it and have a new bridge in place than it would be to simply patch and repair the bridge that's there," said Lowndes EMA Director Ashley Tye."

Construction is expected to begin in September and the county anticipates it will open a year from now.
