VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –WALB News Ten has learned an accused serial rapist, who should be behind bars is free Thursday night.

34-year old Charles James was released from Valdosta State Prison on December 27th after serving time for robbery in Richmond County.

Authorities in Richmond County tell us he was supposed to be sent back to jail there to await trial on kidnapping and rape charges.

Investigators say he assaulted three women in June 2008.

The warden in Valdosta would not comment. Later this evening, the Department of Corrections issued a statement. They said there were no active warrants or detainers found and the reviewer of the GCIC/NCIC report noted no open charges. Based on these checks, James was released.  The department said subsequent review showed even though there were no warrants or detainers, there were open charges on the GCIC. They say those charges should have been verified with the Richmond County authorities.

If you have seen Charles James, call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office or your local law enforcement agency.
