Stay safe from mosquitoes

March 13, 2003

The recent heavy rains in South Georgia have left a lot of standing water, an open invitation for mosquitoes. With the threat of West Nile Virus, you need to be prepared now.

The Georgia Department of Human Resources has mosquito fighting advice:

  • Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts during high mosquito activity times.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, but not on infants or pregnant women.
  • Check screens on windows for holes or leaks.
  • Pour out standing water around houses, including old tires, planting pots and pool covers.
  • And use larvicides in ditches that have water.

The Health Department has an easy to remember phrase to go by, "When in Doubt, Dump it out".
