VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -  Two former VSU assistant coaches are ready to do battle against each other when Texas and Alabama play in the BCS national title game Thursday night.

Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and Alabama's Kirby Smart were assistant coaches on Chris Hatcher's first staff nine years ago.

Both are now among the hottest assistant coaches in college football.

Muschamp slated to become the next head coach of the Longhorns.

Smart won the Broyles Award this year and could get an offer to return to Georgia to be Mark Richt's defensive coordinator.

Now VSU head coach David Dean also was with Muschamp at West Georgia ten years ago.

It was Dean who recommended Muschamp to Hatcher.

David Dean said. "So, you always knew they were going to be very successful coaches. Wish we could have hung on to them for a lot longer. Their potential was so great we knew we weren't going to have them for very long."

Dean was the Blazers offensive coordinator from 2000-2006.

Muschamp was the Blazers defensive coordinator in 2000 and Smart had the position in 2001.
