ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The new year means it's time to focus on conference play for The Valdosta State basketball teams.
Both teams are coming off dominating wins at Albany State and both open up Gulf South Conference play on Thursday at North Alabama.
Both teams entered the season with high expectations but the women are off to a disappointing 5-7 start. The men are ranked 15th in the country and have lived up to the hype with a 12-2 start. Both teams know that the most important stretch of the season begins on Thursday and both head coaches say improvement is needed.
"We just have to be able to score. We go through major scoring droughts and also we've got to hang onto the ball in crucial situations. Those two things together will put us back on a winning track in a hurry" said head women's coach Kiley Hill.
"Got to start getting better and playing your best basketball in February. I think to do that you can never think you're better than you are. You've got to always look at what corrections can we make and what mistakes did we make and how can we change it. If we can do that then I like our chances down the stretch" said head men's coach Mike Helfer.
The Lady Blazers tip off at North Alabama at 1:00 on Thursday. The men will tip off at 4:00. The games were moved to the afternoon because Alabama will be playing Texas for the BCS National Championship Thursday night.
