ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Albany just might be climbing its way out of the recession. A new study shows Albany is one of 118 metro areas in the country now in recovery.

While that doesn't mean the area's economy is back where it was at the beginning of the recession, it's still a good sign that the recovery process has begun.

Barbara Rivera Holmes with the Economic Development Commission said, "We do have a diverse economy and that really has helped stabilized Albany. We have education, we have call centers, we have manufacturing, we have healthcare, we have a broad range of industries, defense, arts, culture, sports, and that really helps to sustain your economy because where you see losses in one, you may see gains in others."

One sector that may be lead the recovery here is retail because so many people travel from outside of Dougherty County to shop in Albany. Other metro areas of Georgia in recovery are Augusta, Brunswick, Columbus, Gainesville, Savannah and Warner Robins.
