Teen's body found in crashed car

March 11, 2003

Thomas County - A driver finds a missing teen's car in the woods. Investigator, Don Allen, explains, "Seeing the sun glimpsing off a metal object in the woods." The 18-year old girl was found dead.

April Highsmith has been missing since Saturday night. Right now, troopers are not sure how long she's been in the woods with her wrecked car. Family, friends and students at Thomas County Central High School are grieving tonight after three days of searching.

Highsmith's teal colored car was camouflaged in the woods. Allen says, "The family was very upset trying to locate their daughter and then happened to end in a bad way."

Her car found three days later, smashed against a tree in Thomas County. Allen explains, "No skid marks and from the history of this weekend, very rainy, and possibly car hydroplaned off road."

A driver spotted the car Tuesday morning on Lower Cairo Road thanks to bright sunshine. A reflection beaming off the metal on the girl's car got the driver's attention. Allen says, "The car was very hard to see especially with the weather, hard to see from the road."

Highsmith wrecked less than a mile from her home. She was a senior at Thomas County Central High School.

Troopers say she died of multiple injuries, but are waiting on autopsy results to determine when she died. Highsmith was ejected from her car and had not been wearing her seat belt. Speed was a major factor.
