Americus-- People who enjoy an evening stroll are getting a special treat in downtown Americus.
Historic gas street lamps line the South Lee Street Bridge. The bases of the lamps are authentic--original from when natural gas lines were laid in Americus in the 1950's. The city's natural gas department refurbished the old lamps themselves. Director Henry Barfield says, "We could not locate any posts that look like it, and we did try to keep the look as authentic as we could. So we opted for the original. We cleaned them up and it turned out right well, a lot better than I thought they would."
It costs about 1,200 dollars a year to keep the 4 lamp posts burning. It's paid for with profits from the city's natural gas department.
