YMCA offers opportunity to shed those pounds

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –You have a few more days to get those resolutions ready for the new year. If losing weight tops your list, a gym is offering an opportunity to shed those pounds through a friendly competition.

The 2010 Team Lean competition kicks off in couple weeks at the YMCA. The YMCA hopes that together the community will lose a total of 10,000 pounds.

When it comes to new year's resolutions, getting in shape is often at the top of the list.

"My new year's resolution is to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout my life by exercising and watching what I eat," said YMCA member Latonya Johnson.

YMCA Fitness Instructor Elvoid Hunter says consistency is the key.

"The main thing is that your diet is proper and that you're eating right and that exercise is consistent," he said.

The YMCA kicks off its second annual Team Lean community wide program on January 9. The YMCA says the program is a way to jump start the new year and shed those unwanted pounds.

South Georgia Medical and Pepsi have sponsored this 10-week weight loss competition. Members and non-members of the YMCA can register as teams of four or five or individually.  There's a $50 registration fee for each person.

"We don't want anyone to be turned away because of inability to pay so by generous donations from businesses and individuals in our community along with the United Way, we offer scholarships and that is financial assistance for every program that the YMCA offers," said YMCA Senior Program Director Cheryl Marshall.

Last year, they had about 220 Team Lean participants.

"We base it on a weight percentage so it's not, okay this guy lost 50 pounds, well, he had more to lose," said YMCA Aquatics Director Angie Leach. "It's all based on percentages."

It's also educational.

"We're going to offer some nutrition classes, some different type classes to get you started, to let you know okay this is what you should eat this is what you need to look at," she said.

When the program starts you can weigh-in at the YMCA or at South Georgia Medical Center each Thursday.

Cash prizes are available for teams and individuals. To find out more, click here or call (229) 244-4646.
