MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) – So many people showed up at a food giveaway in Moultrie Monday, that some folks had to be turned away.
The southwest Georgia Food Bank hosted the event at the Greater Newton Grove Baptist Church. Organizers handed out 600 boxes of food and nearly 600 chickens.
Some people were lined up in the cold three hours before the event started.
"That goes to show me that the days and the times now are very desperate. And until we get to the place where we as a people of God are reaching out to feed the masses, and to make a difference in the people's lives, then I think that's when we'll see the difference in the growth of our community," said Reverend Cornelius Ponder, Newton Grove Baptist Church's Senior Pastor.
Grady Blakely said, "It's just a blessing that Reverend Ponder cares enough for the community to give back to the community."
More than 600 people showed up at the food giveaway. They ran out at about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon.
