Fallen tree causes fatal crash

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  An Albany woman was killed when the pickup she was riding in slammed into a fallen tree on Gordon Avenue Friday morning.

Saturated ground likely cause the large oak tree to fall across a poorly lit area of Gordon Avenue near Drexel Street . Edward Jones and his wife Mary were traveling east around 6:00 this morning and didn't see the tree in the dark. Neither one was wearing a seat belt and Mary struck the windshield with her forehead. She was taken to Phoebe's Emergency Room where she died. Emergency personnel say it's just a freak occurrence.

"We all like to think that we're good drivers and can anticipate a crash but there are times when you simply just don't see if coming and this is truly a tragedy for this family, but it's again another reminder that you should always wear your safety belt and you can be prepared for the circumstances beyond your control," said Michele Strickland, Albany Safe Communities.

Edwards Jones was treated for injuries he received in the crash. In Georgia, adults are not required to buckle up. The measure will likely be brought up by the legislature when their session begins next month.
