Buie trial phase begins

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Opening statements in the theft trial of former downtown manager were made Wednesday morning at the Dougherty Co. courthouse.

Prosecutors explained to jurors that it was Don Buie's intelligence and slick, charming demeanor that helped him steal taxpayer dollars.

They claim he was motivated by sex, money, and cover ups. They will call his wife and mistress to explain how he wrote checks to them that would fly under the radar of the ADICA Board.

Prosecutors say they also plan to call Tim Washington to testify about the backdoor deal he struck with Buie to create a fake lease for the Dollar Square location.

The defense claims that the criminal charges against Buie are nothing more than allegations by scorned lover Nicole Brown.

Buie is charged with writing ADICA checks to Brown and to his wife, Shanon Buie. Buie claims both women did work for him and they were merely being paid for it.
