ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A Dougherty County school is celebrating some national recognition.

People filled Alice Coachman Elementary Tuesday night to celebrate its designation as a 2009 National Blue Ribbon school. It's one of only 12 schools in the nation to receive the honor.

The designation means a school is academically superior or showed dramatic gains in student achievement.

"We were determined that if there were a Dougherty County School to be named a Blue Ribbon School, we would be one. But we did not become a Blue Ribbon School on our own. We had lots of help," said Principal Pat Victor.

Alice Coachman Davis, for whom the school is named, also attended the big celebration. The Albany native is the first black woman to win an olympic gold medal.
