That killer is on the run Tuesday night. It's the first murder in Adel in more than a year and it's a crime that shocked the community.
Crime scene tape surrounds the Quick Stop on South Hutchinson Avenue where a man and his son were gunned down by a robber last night.
56-year old Dasharatbhai Patel was killed. 19-year old Tapan Patel was critically wounded.
Dorothy Martin stopped by the store on her way home from church just moments after the shootings.
"He was standing up to the counter you know with a phone and all and I couldn't believe it," said Martin. "It was a dream. He was just covered in blood and he was saying call 911, call 911. I've been shot."
She tried to call using her cell phone but panicked. After she ran outside screaming, two men told her they called 911 and that police were on their way.
"A friend called me this morning and told me that the father had died and all and that's when I really broke down this morning," said Martin, "Because I prayed and prayed that they would live."
The suspect was wearing gloves and a ski mask. The GBI is investigating the crime as an attempted armed robbery. Patel's body is scheduled for an autopsy tomorrow.
Quick stop, formerly the Holiday Market, is on the busy state route 41 also known as South Hutchinson. Those who lived close by say they heard the gunshots.
"Two gun shots, pow, pow," said David Welch. "That's all I heard."
"It's sad to hear," said James Hall. "I mean I've been doing a lot of business from this particular place. I haven't ever seen them have problems. It's really kind of quiet."
The suspect got away. If you have information regarding the case, Adel Police or the GBI in Douglas want you to contact them.
