ALBANY, GA (WALB) – An Albany church is preparing for an annual food giveaway. They expect one of the biggest turnouts ever.

Last year dozens lined up for a crowded giveaway at First Apostolic Church. Wednesday night, members started bagging items for this weekend's event.

They'll give away turkeys, hams, hens and other items to families in need. Pastor Betty Jackson says people usually start lining up at 4 a.m. and she expects to see more in line this year.

"Of course we expect to see more people this year because of all the many layoffs in Albany, Georgia," said Jackson, "and what we are trying to do this year is ensure that the city of Albany and surrounding counties receive help."

The giveaway will begin at 8 Saturday morning at First Apostolic Church on Lumpkin Street.

Jackson says they wouldn't be able to do so much without contributions from the community and church members. They could always use more as they expect to serve 1,200 people this year. To help, call 229-869-1549.
