Albany -- Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. Christians across South Georgia celebrate the start of the Lent Season on this day.

Worshippers filled the old St. Teresa's Catholic Church on West Residence Avenue at noon, for Ash Wednesday mass. Father Jacek Szuster led the ceremony. On this Holy Day of Obligation, the sign of the Cross is drawn in ashes on the foreheads of the worshippers, as they begin to prepare for Easter.

Father Szuster said " We become more aware about Jesus' death, Jesus' resurrection. About our faith, and how to grow in our faith."

Easter Sunday will be April 20th this year. This is the 144th year that Ash Wednesday has been celebrated in the old St. Teresa's Church building.
