Withlacoochee River floods in Valdosta

March 5, 2003

Lowndes County - The recent rain is causing flood problems in some areas of South Georgia.

Parts of the Withlacoochee River in Lowndes County have seen moderate flooding. The river measured 17.4 feet this morning and expected to rise.

An area of the Franklinville Road has been closed, but EMA officials say nearby homes shouldn't see any damage.

"County managers and city managers did not allow for building in flood plains, so I think we're pretty safe when we have flooding," said Nick Lacey, E.M.A. Director.

There's no word yet on when Franklinville Road might reopen. E.M.A. officials urge people to use extra caution when driving near the area.
