ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Students at one Dougherty County Middle School are pledging to graduate on time.

Each class at Robert Cross Middle Magnet School signed a graduation gown promising that they'll do their best to graduate from high school on time with their class. Graduation coach Cheryl Smith hung the gowns in the cafeteria so students are reminded daily about their promise. She said encouraging them to do well now is a top priority.

"Data shows us that kids who are considering dropping out, they typically consider that at a very early age in elementary years if you could believe that or not, so middle school is a prime time to target them because there are so many other influences out there," said Cheryl Smith, Robert Cross Middle Magnet School Graduation Coach.

The schools has also set up a Winner's circle in the cafeteria once again encouraging the students to set a goal to graduate and stick with it. Dougherty County's graduation rate was up this year at 75.4 percent, just four points below the state average.
