ALBANY, GA (WALB) –More cases of HIV are being reported in Dougherty County. The virus that causes Aids is said to be epidemic for African American women.
Health professionals, and faith and community leaders were given an information briefing on the state of H.I.V. at the Dougherty County health department.
42 new cases have been reported this year, compared to 23 last year.
Most of the new cases are in people between 17 and 24 and most are African American women.
Infectious Disease specialist Dr. Craig Smith said "We really now are migrating into the African American community, especially involving females. And that obviously is very bad as look down the generations, raising children, raising families."
Dr. Smith says blacks make up 26 percent of the population, but 70 percent of HIV cases. He says treatment advancements for AIDS in recent years have been tremendous, but prevention of new HIV cases has lagged behind.
