LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) –The Justice Department has denied Lowndes County's request to expand its commission.

The expansion would have added two commissioners and created two super districts, but the Justice Department says minority voters weren't adequately represented in the proposal.

"All those things were considered in accordance with the voting rights act when the commission met with reapportionment and they didn't just meet with them one time, they met with them several times," said Lowndes County Clerk Paige Dukes.

The county commission meets December 8 to discuss whether to appeal the Justice Department decision or redraw district lines.  Dukes says citizens passionate about the issue are encouraged to contact them.
