ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Smoke from an apartment fire slowed traffic on Whispering Pines Tuesday afternoon. The fire started in the kitchen of a second floor apartment at the Willows.

Investigators aren't sure how it started. One person was evacuated from a first floor apartment. No one else was home. Fire fighters were worried the fire would spread to the roof.

"It got into the attic, as far as we can tell it didn't go through the roof we still have people checking to make sure," said Albany Assistant Fire Chief Allen Cravey.

The fire damage was contained to the apartment where it started, but two other apartments sustained smoke and water damage. The apartment complex and Red Cross are working with displaced families.
