February 28, 2003

Albany- Representatives from the Albany Transit System, Albany State University, and Congressman Sanford Bishop's office participated in the Fifth Annual Quarterman Day celebration.

Ola Mae Quarterman was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a city bus in 1962. "She did the same thing similar to what Rosa Parks has done and I think as Rosa Parks gets recognition, she should get recognition here in the city of Albany, Georgia and Dougherty County," says organizer Tremaine Alford.

Quarterman was unable to make it to the celebration tonight due to illness.

Mayor Tommy Coleman did send a proclamation officially naming February 28th Ola Mae Quarterman Day.
