VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –The holiday season in Valdosta kicked off with the lighting of a Christmas tree on Wednesday.

Children from the Moody Air Force Base Youth Program sang carols and helped the Mayor light the Christmas tree. Touynda Smith has served overseas.

Right now, her husband is in Afghanistan.

She says it's especially hard on her daughters because they're both daddy's girls.

They'll spend Thanksgiving with their extended "Moody" family.

"I miss him and love him and do not want him to leave again," Gabrielle Smith, airman's daughter.

"Actually my girls and I are going to cook dinner for them," said Touynda Smith. "We're going to have friends from there and we're going to have fellowship with them."

Everyone also enjoyed hot chocolate, apple cider, and cookies to help get them in the holiday spirit.
