ALBANY, GA (WALB) – With the war still raging on, thousands of youngsters continue to make the brave decision to join the military.

An Albany teenager is now one of the numbers.

On Sunday afternoon First Mount Olive Baptist Church held a homecoming party for 19-year-old Xavier Martin.

He just enlisted in the US Army. Martin is back from basic training and will be deployed to Germany next month.

Family and friends are proud of his decision to serve.

"I have an uncle that's in the Army and two cousins that are Marines, I think it's starting to become generational thing because my little cousin says he wants to join the Army too." Pvt. Xavier Martin,US Army.

"We wanted to community to see their positive work and attitude, for the community and other young men and women especially for the area we're in we're trying to make a difference as a church," said Pastor Gary Sanders, First Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Xavier's cousin Steven McGhee was also at the celebration, he's a Marine and will be deployed to Afghanistan in the coming months.
