ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Diabetes is a big problem for many Americans. This is the month organizations try to raise awareness about the sometimes deadly disease.

For several hours Saturday morning Physical and Mental Health Committee and the Health Department helped to screen people's blood glucose levels.

They want more people to know their risks of high blood sugar levels and address problems before they get out of hand.

"The purpose of it is to educate the public about the health disparities about diabetes, the rate in Dougherty County is the highest in the state of Georgia," said Judith Hatch, Co-Chair Physical & Mental Health Committee.

People who got diabetes screenings this mooring received a free blood glucose monitoring system to keep abreast of any changes in their sugar levels.
