ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Many South Georgians struggle with obesity and related health issues. An Albany institute helps with the problem and a new designation may further drive that mission.

The Bariatric Institute of Southwest Georgia at Palmyra Medical Center has been around since 2002. They've performed more than 900 lap band procedures.

The institute was recently designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. That's good news for both the center and patients.

"We're excited because a lot of the insurance carriers require that you be a center of excellence for them to cover the lap band procedure. Currently there's not a Center of Excellence in this region so patients are having to go out of the region, out of the state to have this procedure done," said Institute Director Amy Grasman, FNP-C.

Earning the designation took a year of tough inspections, training and data collection. They'll have to be re-evaluated every three years. The Bariatric Institute is the largest lap band center in Georgia.
