VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - When the clock hit zero in Newnan Friday night, it not only ended the season for the Valdosta High football team.

It also was the end for Wildcats head coach Rick Tomberlin.

Tomberlin was informed after the Lowndes game five weeks ago that his contract would not be renewed at the end of this season.

His supporters held out hope the Valdosta Board of Education would vote to keep Tomberlin who led the Wildcats to a 7-4 record this year and a state playoff appearance.

That did not happen.

The Valdosta School Board met in executive session Monday and did not take any action on the decision to not renew Tomberlin's contract.

Under Georgia law, school boards do not have to approve or disapprove of decisions made by superintendents and principals to not renew personnel contracts.

Tomberlin's record at Valdsota High was 22-21. 21-9 in the last three seasons after he went 1-9 in his first season.

His overall record is 222-101 losses and three state titles at Washington County.

Valdosta school superintendent Bill Cason says the school plans to begin interviewing candidates in December.

One other note, Valdosta board voted to appeal to play up in AAAAA.

The Georgia High School Reclassification last week had placed Valdostta in AAAA.
