ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Chefs from Phoebe Putney Hospital cooked firefighters a lunch of beef and lettuce wraps and taught them about food choices that can improve their heart health.

Firefighters have more heart problems and shorter life expectancy than most professions.

Half the firefighters who die in the line of duty each year die from heart attacks.

Phoebe health professionals showed firefighters how healthy eating can help.

"About portion sizes," said Hannah Orlowski, Phoebe Dietitian. "And really good sources of carbohydrates to increase their energy. A lot of times what happens is they eat something like a concentrated sweet, and that shoots them up really high, and then it makes them crash and burn.>

This is the second in a series of Phoebe classes to teach firefighters about stress management, Exercise and fitness, and prescription management, to help them learn a healthier lifestyle.
