ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  A Dougherty County Elementary School gets national attention for the involvement of its parents.

The "I Care" program recently recognized Lake Park Elementary as an outstanding school and one of the top four in the nation for parent participation. Each student takes home an "I Care" activity at the end of the month.

They encourage parents to come up with activities at home that reinforce one of the schools life-skills efforts. School leaders say parents have learned by watching other parents.

"When one parent see another parent doing something they say oh, I could do that with my children and realize that parental involvement most of the time is just good parenting and what our parents do all the time anyway," said Catherine Whitfield, Lake Park Elementary Principal.

November's word of the month is respect. In the media center there are books on respect and plenty of posters around the school to remind students to be respectful.
