ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Albany State football team lost 24-22 to West Alabama Saturday making the fifth straight year the Golden Rams have lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Albany State was trailing 24-16 in the 3rd quarter but a 16 yard touchdown pass from A.J. McKenna to Antwan Harris cut the defect to 24-22 after the Golden Rams failed the two point conversion.
Albany State kicker Juan Bongarra had three chances to give the Rams the lead in the 4th quarter but failed to on all three field goal attempts.
West Alabama blocked Bongarra's first two field goals attempts in the 4th quarter and with 16 seconds to play Bongarra's 36 yard attempt missed wide right.
"He's a good kicker, he's as good a kicker as we've had around here in a long long time so we had a lot of confidence. We just felt if we protected him we would get the job done. We were down by two, it was the right thing to do" said Albany State head coach Mike White.
"I had plenty of confidence in my line and my snapper and my holder. It's all on me. I missed the kick and it's unfortunate" said Bongarra.
Albany State finished the season 8-3.
