ALBANY, GA (WALB) – To many, they are eyesores-- boarded up homes that have long been empty. But to those without a place to live, they become a safe haven from the cold.

Fire officials found evidence Friday morning inside a smoke filled abandoned home that indicated someone had been living there.

Firefighters were called out to 508 Cedar Avenue around 2 o'clock Friday morning. Neighbors called 911 after seeing flames shooting out of the boarded up house.

Once fire crews knocked down the flames a primary search was conducted and no one was discovered inside.

Officials say it was apparent someone had been staying there, but aren't sure how the fire started.

Albany Firefighters urge residents to watch for vagrants going into vacant homes and buildings in their neighborhood, especially during the colder months.
