WARWICK, GA (WALB) – The level at Lake Blackshear is being dropped slightly to compensate for rainfall north of there on Tuesday.
South Atlanta got nearly four and a half inches of rain, and some of that rainfall fell into the Flint River basin.
As that water flows southward, the lake is being lowered to accommodate it. To do that, officials at Crisp County Power have opened one of the floodgates on the dam.
"Normally the water that we use to generate electricity, we like that to go through the powerhouse. But there's more water coming down than we can efficiently pass through," said Gene Ford, the Manager of the Lake Blackshear Dam.
Ford says that they'll lower the level of Lake Blackshear in the next couple of days and that residents who have boats should take precautions to make sure that they are not affected by those dropping levels. There are a total of 14 floodgates on the dam.
