ADEL, GA (WALB) - Cook High baseball coach Bob Owsley says one of the biggest rewards is to see your players make it to the college level.

On this the first day of the fall signing period, Cook High pitcher-infielder Kaleb Cowart fulfills a lifelong dream to play at  Florida State.

Cowart has hit 30 homeruns for the Hornets and has 299 strikeouts as a pitcher with one more season to play.

Cowart may have signed with Florida State but he could be tempted to sign a pro baseball contract this summer after the 2010 MLB draft.

Kaleb Cowart said. "I was just pretty excited when they offered me a scholarship. Finally today I can get to sign. I definitely get to go now."

D.J. Johnson is a shortstop-pitcher who has .418 career batting average and a 21-3 record as a starting pitcher.

Johnson had 147 strikeouts last season and has 246 for his career.

Coach Owsley says D.J. Johnson will be the Bears starting shortstop and will pitch in relief.

D.J. Johnson said."I just like the way they work. They way they do stuff and their ability to get better. I want help them get better.

Outfielder Parker Nix will sign with Florida Community College in Jacksonville during the junior college signing period in January.

The speedy Nix has 36 career stolen bases and has scored 65 runs with a .339 career batting average.

Coach Owsley says Nix is the top outfield recruit for the FCCJ program that Nix is excited about having the chance to play early.

Parker Nix said. "In junior college, you get a real early chance to play going to a junior college starting as a freshman. It will be interesting."

The three Hornets want to win a state title before they head to college.

Cook High has posted an 83-19 record with two AA final four appearances in the last three seasons.
