ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Former Brooks County Sheriff Richard Chafin appeared in federal court in Albany Tuesday on embezzlement charges.

Chafin and his family left Albany's Federal Courthouse just before noon, after being released on a signature bond.

Chafin was indicted in October on charges he spent $63,000 out of the jail commissary fund. In court, Chafin requested a court appointed attorney.

He declined to speak with reporters. "No, not today. Thank you," he said.

Chafin did not have to post any bond, but was ordered to not carry a firearm until his trial is finished. The former Sheriff could face a sentence of 30 years in prison if convicted.
