Read Across America asks people to volunteer

February 21, 2003

Albany -- South Georgia Education leaders and the Albany Mayor are asking for your help in next Friday's Read across America Day. Adults are asked to volunteer February 28th at elementary schools, reading to school children.

The National Education Association sponsors the nationwide celebration on famed children book author Dr. Suess's birthday. The community is asked to promote reading to students, for their both their education and enjoyment.

Reading across American coordinator said "Reading is the fundamental basis for kids academically in all subject areas. If a child can read and understands what they read, they'll be better readers and life long readers."

Mayor Tommy Coleman has declared next Friday "Read Across America Day" in Albany. School systems are asking adults to volunteer to read a book to students a week from today.
