ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Georgia's longest serving mayor must win a runoff to keep his job. Gerald Thompson has been mayor of Fitzgerald for 40 years. He barely missed winning a three-man race outright on Tuesday.

Thompson finished with 674 votes.  That's 48.1% of the votes cast and just short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff.  Prentiss Brown finished second with 414 votes, 29.6%.  Herbert Jones was third with 312 votes which is 22.3%.  Thompson will face Brown in the runoff.
