ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A Dougherty County Superior Court Judge's Mental Health and Substance Abuse Prorgam is honored for improving the lives of families.

Judge Stephen Goss' Treatment Court Program won the Special Merit Award from the Rosalynn Carter Institute Caregivers program.

Since 2002 it has helped about 200 people arrested or hospitalized because of mental illness or drug addiction.

The Bureau of Justice now uses the program to train other court systems.

Goss said  "Pretty much everywhere people are struggling with these same problems in the criminal justice system. People with mental health and drug problems, they just cycle in and out of jails and prison because of their addiction or mental illness."

Sponsor Johnson and Johnson and the Carter Institute awarded the program $5000 to help it deal with the growing number of people being treated.
