ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Phoebe Putney Hospital is taking the lead in providing healthy food options for employees, patients and visitors. Wednesday is National Start Eating Healthy Day, an initiative by the American Heart Association to encourage you to make better choices about the food you eat.

Phoebe Putney's meals are contractually provided by Morrison food services, which is providing healthier options. Rather than burgers and fries each day, diners have the option of whole grains, free fruit and vegetables.

No trans fats are used in cooking and chefs want folks to know that the Southern tradition of frying isn't the only way to prepare food.

"We're trying to get into Roasting, braising, the grilling kind of situation where people can see there are things other than frying that will make your food just 'bang' and taste good as well," said Phoebe Sous Chef Kristian Johnson.

"Well, we think it's very important that we practice what we preach. We're a hospital, we need to be teaching people how to eat healthy," said Phoebe Nutritionist Hannah Orlowski.

A heart-healthy diet is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, high-fiber foods with lean meats and poultry, fish and dairy products. Want to know more about Eating Healthy?
