The Valdosta Board of Education is continuing to deny that they are violating the state open records and meetings act by refusing to release the name of the Valdosta High football coach who the board voted 9-0 last night to hire.
The school board and their attorney have refused WALB's request today to release the name of the coach.
Various sources in winnersville are telling Newscenter Ten Sports that the coach believed to have been hired last night is Rick Darlington from Apopka High School.
Apopka won florida's 6-A state title last year- the highest classification in Florida.
Darlington is in Atlanta this weekend attending a coaching clinic.
However, the principal of Apopka High told the Orlando Sentinel Friday night that he fully expects Darlington to leave to for Valdosta.
Dr. John Edwards says Darlington has not informed him he is leaving but Edwards told the Orlando Sentinel that Darlington would double his salary if he took the Valdosta job.
The Apopka principal says he has talked to Darlington's defensive coordinator about succeeding Darlington but that the defensive coordinator has been offered the chance to work for Darlington in Valdosta.
The Valdosta Board of Education has scheduled a press conference for Monday night at 7pm at Mathis Auditorium to introduce their new head coach.
