Georgia Work Ready receives ACT Award

News release from the Governor's office

ATLANTA - Governor Perdue announced today that the Governor's Office of Workforce Development received the ACT Community Development Award for Georgia Work Ready at ACT's Recognizing Exemplary Achievement in College and Career Readiness ceremony in Washington D.C.

"Georgia Work Ready is preparing our state for economic growth by developing a talented workforce and involving local communities in increasing their high school graduation rates," said Governor Sonny Perdue.  "Today's award is yet another indication of what attracts and grows companies in Georgia: our state's world class workforce."

The award is given by ACT, a not-for-profit organization that provides assessment, research, information and program management solutions for education and workforce development, recognizes states that have made exceptional progress toward aligning workforce and economic strategies to build stronger communities.

Georgia was selected for this honor due to the success of Georgia Work Ready and its ability to motivate counties to take part in the program to enhance individual and business workforce success.

The Governor's Office of Workforce Development is one of only six organizations recognized by ACT at this annual event which this year marked its 50th anniversary.

"Receiving this award from ACT validates the hard work many of our counties have gone through to become Certified Work Ready Communities," said Debra Lyons, director of the Governor's Office of Workforce Development. "Our initiative is successful due to cooperation among our partners such as the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the local chamber of commerce offices across the state, Georgia Power and other corporations, Certified Work Ready Community team leaders, the Technical College System of Georgia, our local county school systems and the Georgia Department of Economic Development."

Georgia Work Ready is based on a skills assessment, certification and skills gap training for job seekers and a job profiling system for businesses. By identifying both the needs of business and the available skills of Georgia's workforce, the state can more effectively generate the right talent for the right jobs. The Georgia Work Ready assessment is powered by ACT's nationally accredited WorkKeys® system and measures both core skills and work habits.  Georgia's Certified Work Ready Community initiative recognizes counties that have ensured their available workforce has earned a threshold number of Work Ready Certificates and has made a step improvement in their graduation rate.
