Tech colleges hit record enrollment

By Ben Roberts - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - More students are attending Georgia technical colleges than ever.  The 28 schools in the system have a fall enrollment of more than 110,254. That's a 24% increase over last year and far above the previous record of 91,838 set in 2003.

Valdosta Technical College grew more than any other school over the last year. Enrollment there is up 48%. Albany Tech has the fifth greatest increase, up 32%.

Administrators say the increase was largely fueled by the downturn in the economy as thousands of unemployed or under-employed Georgians went back to school to get new skills.
