ALBANY, GA (WALB) - We're less than a week away from Halloween.

The day was originally meant to celebrate the end of the harvest and the summer, but over the years it's turned into a giant industry for retailers to cash in on.

But that cash may be less this year. Experts say one of the spookiest parts of Halloween may be the amount people plan to spend on their celebrations.

According to the National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to spend an average of $56 on Halloween, down $10 from last year.

Some local stores do see a difference. They're not putting out as much Halloween merchandise and they're giving big discounts.

"The prices have went down just a little bit on the candy compared to what they were last year, they company didn't send as much this year as they normally do because of sales being a bit lower, we want people to come in and buy what we have, but I believe it's just slow everywhere," said Richard Alderman, Fred's Assistant Manager.

Despite Americans spending less, Halloween is expected to rake in nearly $4.8 billion.
