Palmyra Hospital wins appeal to deliver babies

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Palmyra Medical Center won an appeal that will allow the hospital to begin delivering babies.

A hearing officer with the certificate of need appeal panel upheld an original department of community health decision to grant the certificate to Palmyra.

Phoebe Putney opposed the decision, claiming if Palmyra delivers babies, it will dilute services at Phoebe.

Palmyra has been waiting more than 20 years for this outcome.

"It'll finally give people in this area a choice, they'll have an option of where to deliver their baby, within a 14 county region there are very limited options and this gives patients an option of where they want to deliver their baby and make a choice of where to do so," Said W. Mark Rader, Palmyra President & CEO

Palmyra is working on final design and construction plans and hopes to start offering obstetric services in a year.

The unit is expected to cost close to $7 million to complete.
