LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) - A South Georgia non-profit group that provides therapy to disabled south Georgians through horse riding hopes for a smooth ride to the Special Olympics.

Kids spent Monday afternoon practicing at the Southwest Georgia Therapeutic Riding Center. They'll head to Perry for the Special Olympics next month but getting there isn't cheap. Center leaders are busy planning their annual Derby Day fundraiser.

"It usually costs us about $4,000 believe it or not to go to the Special Olympics in November just for that weekend.  We try to buy shirts and things for our kids to have and we have to replace equipment. Some of our kids can't afford shoes so we buy them boots," said Tara Okon.

Derby Day is Friday night at the Riding Center on Philema Road. There will be food, fun and auctions. To get tickets, call (229) 434-1493.
