TIFTON - Tift County's newest commissioner has died.

Flags flew at half staff today to mark the death of 63-year old J.R. Rowe. Rowe died of a heart attack Wednesday. He was elected in November but was ablt to attend only one commission meeting. Rowe was in Atlanta last week for a commissioners conference when he started having heart problems.

"He deserves a lot of credit, he was willing to put in the hours required to accomplish the task as you know we have to continue," Wayne Johnson, County Administrator said.

Tift County commissioners met this morning to recommend calling a special election March 18 to fill Rowe's seat. Qualifying opens Monday and closes Wednesday at noon.

Rowe's funeral will be Saturday morning at 11 in the Bowen-Donaldson Funeral chapel.
