LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) -  Traffic to came a halt early Monday along Interstate 75 south in Lowndes County. On the shoulder of the road, little was left of an Old Dominion Freight Liner that crashed and burned around 12:30 a.m.

"As far as we know right now, there were two tractor trailers traveling southbound here in the right line. The rear truck ran up on the back end of the front truck," said Trooper Shane Copeland, Georgia State Patrol.

The impact caused the front semi to blow a tire. It made it to the emergency lane and the driver wasn't hurt. But the trucker behind the wheel of the North Carolina based tractor trailer never regained control.

"It continued to go around. It went over on it's side, went through the guard rail and ended up in the ditch on fire," said Copeland.

The driver was dead before paramedics arrived.

Lowndes County fire fighters spent several minutes trying to get the fire under control. In the mean time, all southbound lanes of I-75 southbound near Lake Park were shut down for nearly two hours.

Georgia State Patrol Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash. The name of the driver who was killed has not been released.
