ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Souther Field Airport, a former military training base, has now been officially renamed the Jimmy Carter Regional Airport in honor of the former president.

Despite some opposition to the renaming a big ceremony took place in Americus Sunday afternoon.

"We sometimes forget that one of our citizens rose to that office," said Brent Williams, County Commissioner.

"I applaud this community for the decision to re-name this airport today in honor of President Jimmy Carter," said Rep. Sanford Bishop, (D) Georgia.

Carter's name has been placed in stone replacing Souther Field Airport. It was named after Henry Souther, who helped develop the airfield as a military training base during World War I.

"No member of my family or my friends made the suggestion it came form the members of the county commission and the city council of Americus," said President Jimmy Carter.

The former president knows not everyone agrees with the decision, he suggested a historic marker be placed here to honor Henry Souther.

"I'm sure the fervent friends of Mr. Souther who have communicated with me and the news media so much, would be delighted to pay the cost of them memorial," said Carter.

"Thank you for your service, not only to the nation, but to the world," said Rep. Mike Cheokas, (D) District 134.

Souther's name has been removed and Carter accepted the honor.

"He and his family enjoyed this honor for more than 90 years and maybe for the next 20 or 30 or 50 years before they decide to change again my family will enjoy the same," said Carter.

Opponents say they have no problem with Carter and would be happy to see something else named after the 39th president. They only want to preserve the history of the airfield.
