MCLB Albany-- The base has been an important part of the Albany area for half a century, and today it is one of the most productive maintenance facilities in the entire Department of Defense.
The base was commissioned on March 1, 1952 and opened in 1954, and is now home to 768 Marines and more than 2,300 civilian workers. About 200 contract employees also work on the base.
The base's primary mission is to procure, maintain, store, and distribute supplies and equipment. The commanding general here also oversees a similar base in Barstow, California and the Blount Island Command in Florida.
That's where equipment repaired here is loaded on pre-positioned ships that are constantly at sea, ready to head to crisis areas.
