CORDELE, GA (WALB) - Three young children injured in an apartment fire on Sunday are getting better.
18-month old Demetrius Waters remains in Critical condition in the Augusta Burn Center.
3-year old Larry Bass has improved from critical to serious and 2-year old Jakeveon Brown and 5-year old Deontaevious Stubbins have both improved to fair.
Fire Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine says while the children were supposed to be napping, one of them found a lighter and began playing with it.
"On the terrible tragedy in Cordele, no one died, but the children did have a lighter. They were playing with it, apparently some of the bedding caught on fire and caused what could have been a terrible tragedy of death," said John Oxendine, Fire Commissioner.
One of the boys fathers was at home when the fire occurred. He as well as others tried to get into the room to rescue them, but was unable.
Firefighters were eventually able to get them all out of the apartment.
